The M5 MacBook Pro 14 uses the same generation of Apple silicon as the Air, but adds a fan so it can hold top speed through long exports and big projects. Apple has also built neural accelerators into each GPU core, which speeds up on-device AI tasks as well as graphics work.
The 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display is the real draw: mini-LED backlighting, very high HDR brightness and a 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate make it ideal for photo and video editing. You also get HDMI, an SD card slot and three Thunderbolt ports, so there's no dongle hunting.
For email, browsing and office work it's more laptop than you need, and the MacBook Air is the better buy. For creative professionals it's worth the extra money.

The optional 14-inch 2.8K OLED touchscreen runs at 120Hz and reaches up to 1,100 nits for HDR, and Lenovo usually prices it below Microsoft's Surface Laptop with a similar specification.
As with all Snapdragon laptops, check your must-have apps and games are compatible with Windows on Arm. Ports are limited to three USB-C (USB4) sockets, so you may need an adapter for older accessories or HDMI.

If you want a bigger screen and plenty of ports without paying flagship prices, the Vivobook S 15 is a smart buy. It pairs Snapdragon X Elite performance and a 45 TOPS NPU with a 15.6-inch 3K OLED display that refreshes at 120Hz.
Unlike many thin laptops, it keeps two USB-A ports and HDMI alongside two USB4 sockets, so you can plug in almost anything without a dongle.
The build is plastic and aluminium rather than all-metal, and at around 1.4kg it is heavier than 14-inch models, but for a home or student laptop that is an easy trade for the extra screen space.
It uses the first-generation Snapdragon X chips, so it's slower than 2026's X2 laptops, but that's reflected in the price, and it's often discounted now that newer models are arriving.

Copilot+ PC or MacBook?
Windows laptops that meet Microsoft's Copilot+ PC standard have an NPU rated at 40 TOPS (trillion operations per second) or more and at least 16GB of RAM. They unlock Windows features such as Recall, Click to Do, live captions with translation and Windows Studio Effects.
MacBooks with Apple silicon use Apple's Neural Engine to run Apple Intelligence, which includes writing tools, smart summaries, image clean-up and a more capable Siri. If you already own an iPhone, a MacBook fits in seamlessly. If you rely on Windows-only software, stick with a Copilot+ PC.
Snapdragon or Intel?
Snapdragon (Arm) laptops such as the Surface Laptop and Yoga Slim 7x usually offer the best battery life. The trade-off is compatibility: most popular apps run fine, but some older software, printer drivers and games with anti-cheat systems don't.
Intel Core Ultra laptops such as the Zenbook S 14 are also Copilot+ PCs and run every Windows program natively. Choose Intel if you game or use specialist software.
How much memory and storage do you need?
16GB of RAM is the sensible minimum in 2026, as AI features and modern browsers use a lot of memory. Choose 32GB if you edit video, run virtual machines or keep dozens of tabs open. For storage, 512GB suits most people; pick 1TB if you store lots of photos, videos or games locally.
