Choose the OLED version if you can. Its 13-inch 2880×1920 screen with 120Hz refresh looks fantastic for films and sketching, and the built-in kickstand lets you set it at almost any angle on a desk or tray table.

The catch is the price of extras: the Surface Pro Keyboard and Slim Pen are sold separately and add significantly to the cost, so budget for them. It is also less comfortable on your lap than a traditional laptop.

To reach a lower price, Microsoft uses a 90Hz LCD screen rather than OLED, and there is no Surface Connect port: you charge over USB-C. The matching keyboard and pen remain optional extras.

For note-taking, browsing, streaming and office work it is a lovely, portable companion. Photo editors and heavy multitaskers should look at the 13-inch model instead.

Microsoft has just announced a 2nd Edition of the 12-inch Surface Pro with a Snapdragon X2 Plus chip and an 80 TOPS NPU (up to 15.5 hours' battery).
