Best kids' bikes in 2026

Updated · 6 products compared · 12 features compared

The right kids' bike is the one that fits today and is light enough for a small child to control. Weight matters far more than it does for adults, because a heavy bike can put a child off for good. This page covers six current bikes across the main stages: a balance bike, 14, 16, 20 and two 24 inch models.

We picked from what independent testers and specialist shops recommend, then checked specs against brand and dealer pages. Where a brand publishes inside leg rather than height, we show that. Two brands appear twice because each is strong at different sizes. Prices and stock change often, so use the buttons to see today's price.

Pros

  • Only 2.95 kg, easy for a toddler to handle
  • Fits from about 18 months to 5 years
  • Air-filled tyres give grip and a smoother ride
  • Warranty can be extended to lifetime

Cons

  • No brake, so older children outgrow it for faster riding
  • Costs more than a basic wooden or steel balance bike
  • Brand does not publish a recommended height

The Hornit AIRO 12 is built around one idea: a balance bike should weigh so little that a toddler can pick it up after a fall and steer it without effort. At 2.95 kg it is among the lightest balance bikes you can buy, thanks to its magnesium alloy frame and fork.

Fit is based on inside leg rather than height. Hornit lists 30 to 46 cm, with a saddle that moves between 29 and 44 cm from the ground, which means many children can start from around 18 months and keep using it until about five. The air-filled 12.5 inch tyres grip better and soak up bumps in the park or on gravel better than the solid foam tyres on cheaper bikes.

It has no brake. For a first balance bike that suits most toddlers, who slow down with their feet, but a child who is getting quick may want a model with a hand brake, and Hornit offers a separate AIRO 14 for older riders.

The warranty is three years on the frame and fork, upgradeable to lifetime when you register. A balance bike is the best preparation for a pedal bike, because children who can already balance usually move straight on without stabilisers.

A very light 14 inch pedal bike with two proper hand brakes and short cranks that suit small legs.

Compare prices in other countries

Each shop shows its own price, currency and delivery terms. Not every shop delivers abroad, and taxes can differ.

Pros

  • Only 5 kg without pedals
  • Two independent hand brakes teach proper braking
  • Short 80 mm cranks suit small legs
  • Quality Schwalbe tyres

Cons

  • Pricier than most 14 inch bikes
  • Single speed, so steep hills are tiring
  • No coaster brake for children used to backpedal stopping

The woom GO 2 is aimed at children of 3 to 4.5 years who can already balance and are ready for pedals. Its main selling point is weight: woom lists 5 kg without pedals, which is exceptionally light for a pedal bike and is the difference between a child who rides happily and one who struggles to start.

The frame is 6061 aluminium with a matching aluminium fork, and it uses two independently operated mini V-brakes. There is no coaster brake, so children learn to use their hands, and the rear lever is coloured green to help a parent explain which one to squeeze first. Forged 80 mm cranks keep the pedal circle small, and Schwalbe Little Joe tyres give reliable grip.

Fit is stated by height: 95 to 110 cm. The saddle moves between 394 and 489 mm, and the stand-over height is 350 mm, so most children in range can put their feet down. The bike has a single speed, which is fine for parks and paths but is the one limit if you live somewhere hilly.

It costs more than a supermarket-style 14 inch, but it also keeps its value well and is easy to pass down to a younger sibling. If your child is a confident balance bike rider, this is a very easy first pedal bike.

Each shop shows its own price, currency and delivery terms. Not every shop delivers abroad, and taxes can differ.

Pros

  • Light for a 16 inch bike at 5.55 kg
  • Aluminium frame and fork
  • Narrow bars and 100 mm cranks suit small hands and legs
  • Long warranty

Cons

  • Single speed only
  • No stabilisers, which some families want
  • Brand does not publish a recommended height

Sixteen inch bikes are often heavy and clumsy, so a model at 5.55 kg stands out. The Hornit HERO 16 uses an aluminium frame and fork, narrow 460 mm bars and short 100 mm cranks, which together make it easier to start, steer and stop than many cheaper bikes of this size.

Hornit recommends it for ages 3 to 6 and an inside leg of 40 to 51 cm. Hornit does not publish a height range, so measure the inside leg and compare it with the saddle range rather than relying on age. The seat post is adjustable and the advice is that the child should be able to just touch the ground.

It has a single speed, with a 25-tooth chainring and a 15-tooth rear sprocket, which is fine for pavements, parks and gentle paths. Tektro hand brakes with finger-blade levers are fitted. Stabilisers are not supplied, and Hornit says they can be fitted but are not recommended. Many children who have used a balance bike will not need them.

The warranty is three years on the frame and fork, extendable to lifetime for the first owner, and two years on other parts. For a child moving from 14 inch or stepping up from a balance bike, this is a strong value choice.

Frog 53 (20 inch)

A light, well-designed 20 inch bike with child-specific shifters and cranks, a natural step for a first geared bike.

Each shop shows its own price, currency and delivery terms. Not every shop delivers abroad, and taxes can differ.

Pros

  • Light for a geared 20 inch bike at 8.15 kg
  • Shifters and short cranks designed for children
  • Mudguards and bell included
  • 8 gears help with hills

Cons

  • Costs more than supermarket-style 20 inch bikes
  • Rim brakes rather than discs
  • Fit information varies between charts

The Frog 53 is one of the most recommended 20 inch bikes in the UK, and it is easy to see why. At 8.15 kg it is much lighter than many geared kids' bikes, and its 6061 aluminium frame and fork are paired with child-specific parts: patented 114 mm straight-arm cranks to keep the pedalling action comfortable, narrow 460 mm bars and shifters designed for small hands.

It has eight gears from a Shimano Altus rear derailleur with an 11-32T cassette, enough to climb the hills of a family ride without a frustrating gear jump. The brakes are Tektro V-type rim brakes with kids' levers. Full-length mudguards and a bell are included, which is handy in an Irish or British winter.

Sizing is by inside leg. Dealer listings give an inside leg of 50 to 65 cm and an age of 5 to 7, so measure your child and check against the current chart before buying. Frog is now owned by a large UK retailer group, and its own website forwards to that retailer, so buy from an authorised seller and check the warranty terms on the listing.

The bike holds its value well on the second-hand market, which softens the higher upfront cost.

Trek Precaliber 24 8-Speed Suspension
Best budget 24 inch

Trek Precaliber 24 8-Speed Suspension

Best for: Older children on mixed paths · Upper mid-range

A sensible, widely stocked 24 inch bike with easy twist shifting and a suspension fork for paths and light trails.

Compare prices in other countries

Each shop shows its own price, currency and delivery terms. Not every shop delivers abroad, and taxes can differ.

Pros

  • Easy twist shifter with gear display
  • Wide tyres and suspension fork for comfort
  • Rack and kickstand mounts
  • Widely stocked with good back-up

Cons

  • Rim brakes rather than discs
  • Heavier than the premium woom
  • Suspension fork is basic

The Trek Precaliber 24 is a common choice for the move to a full-size-feeling mountain-style bike. It uses an aluminium frame with a low stand-over height, so a child can get on and off easily, and a 45 mm suspension fork to take the sting out of kerbs and rough paths.

The drivetrain is Shimano Tourney, with an 8-speed 13-34T freewheel and a twist shifter that includes a gear display, which is simpler for children than a thumb trigger. Cranks are 152 mm and the bars are a narrow 560 mm. The tyres are 24 x 2.25 inch Bontrager XR1, which are wide enough for gravel and grass. Brakes are alloy linear-pull rim brakes with children's levers.

Trek's own sizing chart puts the 24 inch bikes at about 8 to 12 years and 130 to 150 cm. The frame has rack and kickstand mounts, which makes it useful for school runs and weekend rides as well as paths.

It will not match the lightness or hydraulic brakes of the pricier woom Off Air 5, but for most families it covers what a child needs at a more moderate price. Trek also sells a rigid version without suspension, which is lighter.

A properly specified kids' mountain bike with an air fork, hydraulic discs and a 9-speed drivetrain, at a premium price.

Compare prices in other countries

Each shop shows its own price, currency and delivery terms. Not every shop delivers abroad, and taxes can differ.

Pros

  • Adjustable air fork with lockout
  • Hydraulic disc brakes suit small hands
  • Tubeless-ready tyres and 9-speed gears
  • Light for a bike of this spec

Cons

  • Expensive for a bike children outgrow
  • Overkill for pavement use
  • 70 kg total load limit is lower than some

The woom OFF AIR 5 is for the child who rides trails, bike parks or forest tracks and is quickly outgrowing a simpler bike. It borrows the parts of an adult mountain bike and sizes them for a child: an 80 mm air-sprung RST fork with rebound and compression adjustment and a lockout, Promax hydraulic discs with 160 mm rotors, and a 9-speed SRAM X5 drivetrain with 130 mm cranks.

The frame is 6061 T6 aluminium with butted tubes, and woom lists the bike at 10.3 kg without pedals, which is light for a full-suspension-fork bike. The Schwalbe Rocket Ron tyres are 2.35 inches wide and tubeless-ready, which lets you run lower pressures for grip.

Woom recommends it for children 128 to 145 cm tall, around 7 to 11 years, and the total load limit including bike, rider and cargo is 70 kg. The narrow 585 mm bar is made to fit smaller hands.

The cost is the obvious drawback. For a child who mostly rides on pavements, a simpler bike such as the Trek Precaliber will do the job for less. But if your child wants to ride proper trails, hydraulic brakes and a real fork make riding safer and more fun, and the bike keeps a strong resale value.

Buying guide

Choose wheel size by height, not age

Age ranges are only a rough guide because children of the same age vary a lot. Use height or, better, inside leg, and check the brand's own chart. As a guide, balance bikes suit children up to about 5 years, 14 inch bikes about 95 to 110 cm, 16 inch about 100 to 115 cm, 20 inch about 114 to 132 cm and 24 inch about 128 to 150 cm. When between sizes, choose the smaller bike if the child is still learning, and the larger one only if they can stand over it with feet flat.

Weight matters more than you think

A child's bike should weigh no more than roughly 40 percent of the child's own weight, and lighter is better. A heavy bike is hard to start, steer and stop, and it is the most common reason a child loses interest. This is why aluminium frames, such as those on every pedal bike here, are worth paying extra for compared with steel.

Balance bikes first

Learning to balance is the hardest part of riding. A balance bike lets a child do that by pushing along with their feet, and most children who start on one move to a pedal bike without stabilisers. Look for a low saddle, air-filled or good foam tyres and a low weight. A brake is not essential for toddlers but is useful for older, faster children.

Brakes and gears

Two hand brakes teach proper braking, but check that the levers are small enough for small hands to squeeze. Coaster (backpedal) brakes are simple and suit young children who find hand brakes tricky. Hydraulic disc brakes need less finger force, which helps on 24 inch trail bikes. Gears are useful from about 20 inches if your child rides hills; below that, a single speed is simpler. Twist shifters are easier for younger children than trigger shifters.

Helmets and safety

Always buy a properly fitting helmet that meets the EN 1078 standard and replace it after any hard impact. Fit the bike by inside leg, not age: the child should be able to touch the ground with the balls of both feet when seated, and stand over the top tube with some clearance. Check that brake levers can be reached and squeezed, and add a bell and reflectors if the bike does not have them.

Frequently asked questions

What size bike does my child need?

Choose by height and inside leg, not age. Roughly, 14 inch suits 95 to 110 cm, 16 inch about 100 to 115 cm, 20 inch about 114 to 132 cm and 24 inch about 128 to 150 cm. Always check the specific brand's chart, because sizing differs between makers.

Should my child start on a balance bike?

It is usually the quickest route. A balance bike teaches steering and balance first, so most children can move to a pedal bike without stabilisers, often within weeks.

Do children need gears?

Not on smaller bikes. A single speed is fine for 14 and 16 inch bikes. From 20 inches, gears help on hills and longer rides, and the Frog 53 and Trek Precaliber 24 both have easy-to-use gears for children.

Is it worth buying a lightweight kids bike?

Usually yes. A lighter bike is easier to start, steer and stop, and it keeps its resale value well, so the net cost can be lower than the sticker price suggests.

Can I buy a bigger bike for my child to grow into?

It is better not to. A bike that is too big is harder to control and less safe, and the child cannot reach the brakes or touch the ground. Buy the size that fits now and resell or pass it on.
