Sony PlayStation 5 Digital Edition (slim, CFI-2100 group) review

Full review

The Digital Edition is the PlayStation to buy if you want the PS5 game library without paying for features you may not use. It is the slim design, measuring roughly 358 by 80 by 216 mm and weighing about 2.6 kg, which makes it easier to fit into a TV unit than the original launch model.

The main compromise is the missing disc drive. Everything is downloaded from PlayStation Store, which suits many players but rules out buying cheaper used discs. Sony does sell a drive separately that plays 4K Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD, and it pairs with the slim Digital Edition after an internet connection is made during setup, so you can change your mind later.

Storage is 825 GB, of which part is reserved for system software, so you will probably want to manage your library or add storage before long. Sony's page does not list a maximum frame rate or an exact resolution for this model, so we leave those as not stated; it does describe 4K graphics with HDR on compatible games.

Online multiplayer for most paid games requires a PlayStation Plus membership, which is not included. Backward compatibility with PS4 games is a real bonus for new owners, as it fills the library while newer releases arrive. For most households it is the sensible, low-fuss choice.
