Full review

Squier is Fender's budget brand, and the Affinity Precision Bass PJ is a first bass at a starter price. It combines a Precision-style split-coil pickup in the neck position with a Jazz-style single-coil at the bridge. The P pickup gives the thick, round tone heard on countless rock and soul records, while the J pickup adds growl and definition for funk and slap.

Each pickup has its own volume, plus a master tone, so you can blend between them without a switch. The body is poplar, the neck is maple with a C profile and a 41.3 mm nut, and the fretboard is Indian laurel or maple depending on finish. Scale length is the standard 34 inches, which is what most teachers and songbooks assume.

The hardware is basic: a standard four-saddle bridge and vintage-style tuners. That is fine for learning, and the bass is light enough for younger players to manage. Squier also sells it as a pack with a gig bag and a Fender Rumble practice amp, which is good value if you are starting from nothing. Andertons lists the bass on its own and in the pack.
