Full review

The Hierro is New Balance's cushioned trail shoe, and version 9 borrows from the More Trail with more foam. It has a low 4 mm drop and a tall, cushioned stack.

Foam is a double-layered, dual-density Fresh Foam X. The firmer bottom layer supports stable footing and the softer top layer provides the brand's plush comfort, so it takes the sting out of rocky descents and long days on uneven ground. The outsole is Vibram Megagrip with larger lugs and micro-traction details intended for rocky, slippery and uneven trails.

The upper is softer than before, with a redesigned gusseted tongue that stays snug and keeps out dirt and debris. The retailer lists D, 2E and 4E widths, which is a standout range in trail running and helps people with wide feet.

The low drop and tall, soft stack feel different from most trail shoes, so try it in a store if possible. It is a strong choice for hiking-style runs and long, slow days outdoors, less so for fast technical racing.

Spec check note: New Balance's own site blocked our access, so we only use figures the retailer lists as supplied by the brand, such as the drop. Weight and stack heights are left out because the retailer's listing gives its own measurements. Widths shown are those the retailer lists; New Balance sells more widths in some markets. The retailer page mentions no plate.
