Best washer dryers in 2026

Updated · 5 products compared · 19 features compared

A washer dryer saves floor space by washing and drying in one machine, which suits flats and homes without a utility room. The trade-off is that drying uses much more energy and water than in a separate heat pump dryer, and every model here is class D for the full wash-and-dry cycle.

We compared five freestanding washer dryers on sale in the UK in late 2026 on what matters day to day: how much they can wash and dry in one go, energy and water per cycle, how long a full wash and dry takes, spin noise and features such as auto-dosing and app control.

Quick answer: Best overall: Bosch Series 8 WNC254ARGB. Best budget: Hoover HBWR 496B8-80. Best for quick washes: LG FWY706WWTN1. Fastest spin: AEG LWR8516O5UD. Best premium and most efficient: Miele WTD160 WCS.

Pros

  • 10.5 kg wash drum, 6 kg wash-and-dry
  • i-DOS automatic dosing
  • Wash & Dry 45 for small loads
  • AquaStop leak protection

Cons

  • Wash-and-dry energy class D, like most washer dryers
  • Bosch's own shop showed it unavailable
  • Programme list not published in full

Bosch's Series 8 WNC254ARGB is the washer dryer for a busy household. Bosch UK lists a 10.5 kg washing load and 6 kg in one continuous wash-and-dry cycle, energy class D for the full wash-and-dry label (the washing part alone is class A), 50 litres for an Eco wash and 75 litres for wash and dry, and a 70 dB(A) spin in noise class A. Marks Electrical adds the energy figures: 52 kWh per 100 wash cycles and 305 kWh per 100 wash-and-dry cycles.

i-DOS doses detergent automatically, AutoDry stops drying when clothes are dry, and Wash & Dry 45 washes and dries a small load in 45 minutes. Home Connect gives app control, and AquaStop protects against leaks.

Bosch is offering a five-year warranty on purchases registered between April 2026 and March 2027, plus ten years on the SilentPowerDrive motor. Bosch's own online shop showed it as unavailable when we checked, but Marks Electrical listed it in stock.

Like all washer dryers, drying uses much more energy than washing, which is why the overall class is D. If you have space, a separate washer and heat pump dryer will cost less to run.

Pros

  • Low price
  • Efficient wash at 40 kWh per 100 cycles
  • Wi-Fi with hOn app
  • Quiet 70 dB(A) spin

Cons

  • Very long 8 h 40 min full wash and dry
  • Only one year of labour cover
  • Wash and dry uses 308 kWh per 100 cycles

Hoover's HBWR 496B8-80 is about as cheap as a washer dryer from a mainstream brand gets, and its specs are better than the price suggests. Hoover UK and John Lewis agree on 9 kg wash and 6 kg dry, wash class A at 40 kWh per 100 cycles, wash-and-dry class D at 308 kWh, 42 litres for a wash and 74 litres for wash and dry, and a 70 dB(A) spin in noise class A.

You get 16 programmes including a steam programme, a 14-minute quick wash for 1 kg and Wi-Fi with Hoover's hOn app for remote start. An inverter motor drives the drum.

The drawback is time. Hoover gives 520 minutes, nearly nine hours, for a full wash and dry of the rated load, so it suits overnight running better than a quick turnaround. Like all washer dryers, it dries much less than it washes, so split big washes in two before drying.

Hoover gives one year of labour and ten years of parts if registered; John Lewis adds its own two-year guarantee. For a small flat with no room for two machines, it is a sensible low-cost choice.

Pros

  • 10 kg wash drum
  • TurboWash 39 full wash in 39 minutes
  • Class A spin-drying
  • Five-year warranty when registered

Cons

  • No Wi-Fi
  • Uses 90 litres for a wash and dry
  • Wash-and-dry class D

LG's FWY706WWTN1 combines a 10 kg wash drum with 6 kg drying. LG's UK page and Euronics agree on 10 kg and 6 kg, 52 litres per wash and 71 dB(A) on spin. LG lists washing class A at 46 kWh per 100 cycles and wash-and-dry class D at 308 kWh, with 90 litres of water for a wash and dry, which is more than the Hoover or Bosch because drying uses water to condense the steam.

TurboWash 360 sprays detergent water from several angles, and the TurboWash 39 programme completes a wash in 39 minutes. Speed 14 handles small loads. Spin-drying is class A, so clothes go into the drying phase with less water. LG's AI DD direct-drive motor chooses drum movements to suit the fabric.

There is no Wi-Fi on this model, and LG's page is contradictory on steam, so do not buy it for that. LG gives five years of cover when registered, and Euronics lists two years plus three more on registration.

At 565 mm deep (620 mm with door), it is slimmer than the AEG or Bosch.

Pros

  • 1600 rpm spin removes more water before drying
  • Steam Refresh without a full wash
  • UniversalDose dissolves pods in the drawer
  • Five-year warranty

Cons

  • Loud spin at 76 dB(A)
  • Deep at 660 mm
  • UniversalDose is not true auto-dosing

AEG's 8000-series LWR8516O5UD is the only washer dryer here with a 1600 rpm spin, which wrings more water out before the drying stage. AEG UK lists 10 kg wash and 6 kg dry, washing class A at 51 kWh per 100 cycles, wash-and-dry class D at 307 kWh, and a spin of 76 dB(A), noise class B. Marks Electrical confirms the classes and capacities and gives 42 litres for a wash and 75 litres for wash and dry, with a full wash and dry taking 465 minutes.

UniversalDose is a drawer designed for detergent pods: water jets dissolve the capsule before it reaches the drum. It is not automatic dosing like Bosch i-DOS, but it avoids undissolved pods. ProSteam features include a 25-minute Steam Refresh that relaxes creases and odours without washing, and Wash&Dry 60 handles a small load in an hour. App control comes through the AEG app.

It is loud on spin and up to 660 mm deep, so it suits a utility room better than an open-plan kitchen. AEG and Marks list five years of cover when registered.

Pros

  • Lowest wash-and-dry energy here at 266 kWh/100 cycles
  • Least water for wash and dry (68 litres)
  • Fastest full wash and dry at 389 minutes
  • Miele@home app

Cons

  • Smallest capacity at 8 kg / 5 kg
  • Most expensive here
  • Warranty length not stated by Miele UK

Miele's WT1 WTD160 WCS is smaller than the rest, at 8 kg wash and 5 kg dry, but it is the most efficient washer dryer in this comparison. Miele UK lists wash-and-dry energy of 266 kWh per 100 cycles (class D) and 47 kWh for washing only (class A), with 68 litres of water for a full wash and dry. The complete cycle takes 389 minutes at rated load, the shortest here. Spin is 1500 rpm and 71 dB(A), noise class A.

The Honeycomb drum is gentle on fabrics and the DuraLife inverter motor is designed for a long life. There is no TwinDos on this model, but CapDosing lets you add Miele capsules for special items. Miele@home adds app control, push notifications and remote updates.

At 94 kg and 637 mm deep it is solid, and the price is the highest here. Miele UK did not state the warranty length on the product page, so check the terms with your retailer. Choose it if you will use the dryer function often and want the lowest running costs.

Buying guide

Washer dryer or separate machines?

If you have room for two machines, a washing machine plus a heat pump dryer costs less to run. In this list the washer dryers use 266 to 308 kWh per 100 wash-and-dry cycles; a heat pump dryer on the EU label uses roughly 80 to 140 kWh per 100 drying cycles, plus around 40 to 50 kWh for the wash. A washer dryer makes most sense where space is tight or you only dry occasionally.

Wash capacity is not dry capacity

Every washer dryer dries less than it washes: here 5 to 6 kg of drying against 8 to 10.5 kg of washing. The EU label shows the load the machine can wash and dry in one continuous cycle. If you wash a full drum, take some out before drying, or split it into two drying runs, or clothes will come out damp and creased.

Reading the washer dryer energy label

Washer dryers sold in the UK and Ireland carry two energy classes: one for the full wash-and-dry cycle and one for washing only, plus kWh and litres per 100 cycles for each. All models here are A for washing and D for wash and dry, so compare the kWh and water figures. The Miele uses the least at 266 kWh and 68 litres per wash-and-dry cycle.

Time and water

A full wash and dry of the rated load takes a long time: 389 minutes for the Miele, 465 for the AEG and 520 for the Hoover on their own figures. Most washer dryers also use water to condense the moisture during drying, so a wash and dry uses 68 to 90 litres. Many people run them overnight.

Space and installation

These machines are all about 850 mm high and 600 mm wide to fit under a standard worktop, but depth varies from 565 mm (LG) to 660 mm (AEG). Allow room behind for hoses and in front for the door, about 1050 to 1150 mm when fully open.

Frequently asked questions

Are washer dryers any good?

Modern washer dryers wash as well as a washing machine, and all here are class A for washing. Drying is slower and less efficient than a heat pump dryer, so they suit small homes and occasional drying best.

What is the most energy-efficient washer dryer?

Of the models we compared, the Miele WTD160 WCS uses the least energy and water for a full wash and dry: 266 kWh and 68 litres per 100 cycles and per cycle respectively. Every model is class D for wash and dry.

How much can a washer dryer dry at once?

Usually 5 to 6 kg, even when the drum washes 9 or 10 kg. The Bosch, AEG, LG and Hoover dry 6 kg in one continuous cycle and the Miele 5 kg.

How long does a washer dryer take to wash and dry?

A full load usually takes six to nine hours. On manufacturer figures the Miele takes 389 minutes, the AEG 465 and the Hoover 520. Smaller loads and quick programmes such as Bosch Wash & Dry 45 or AEG Wash&Dry 60 are much faster.

Can I buy these washer dryers in Ireland?

We confirmed UK availability for all five. Model codes for Ireland can differ, so check the exact code with Irish retailers such as Harvey Norman, DID, Currys or Euronics before you buy.
