Full review

The Structure is Nike's shoe for runners whose ankles roll inward or who simply want a more guided ride. The 26 pairs a full-length ReactX midsole with a midfoot support system that wraps around the arch and heel. Nike says this slows the rate of ankle eversion and gives a firm platform for the push-off, rather than relying on a hard post.

Cushioning is generous. The stack has gone up compared with the previous version, although Nike does not publish a figure, and the plush collar and tongue help keep the heel locked. The forefoot outsole uses a lighter, more flexible rubber, while the heel gets harder-wearing rubber where most runners strike first.

Two practical points. First, Nike states the shoe fits small and recommends ordering half a size up, so do not just buy your usual size. Second, the brand weight is about 321 g for a men's size 9, which makes it a training shoe, not a fast one.

If you have been told you need stability, or you tire and collapse inward late in a run, the Structure 26 is the Nike to try. Neutral runners with no support needs will find the Pegasus 42 more flexible and lighter.
