The FX 3 has long been one of the default answers to 'which hybrid should I buy?', and the fourth generation, which has replaced the older FX 3 Disc and Disc Equipped models, keeps that reputation. It is a light, quick aluminium bike with a carbon fork, which noticeably reduces road buzz compared with the steel forks on cheaper hybrids.

Gen 4 moves to Shimano's Cues groupset in a single-chainring 1x10 setup. There is only one shifter and no front derailleur to adjust, and the 11-48T cassette gives a very low gear for steep hills. The U6000 shifter has a small window showing which gear you are in. Shimano hydraulic disc brakes and tubeless-ready wheels with 35 mm Bontrager tyres round it off.

The frame has mounts for a rack, mudguards and a kickstand, and the fork takes a rack too, so it is easy to turn into a year-round commuter. Unlike the old Disc Equipped model, though, none of those accessories are included, so budget for them if you ride in winter. Trek also offers a Stepover version with a lower top tube and sizes from XS to XXL.

For a rider who wants one bike for commuting and weekend fitness rides on mostly paved routes, it is a polished, dependable choice.
