Best for: Commuters on a tight budget ยท Budget

Our verdict: A lot of bike for the money: hydraulic disc brakes, a wide-range 20-speed Shimano Cues drivetrain and every mount you need, held back only by slow tyres.

Full review

The Pinnacle Neon shows how much a budget hybrid now gets. For around the cheapest price in this comparison, it has hydraulic disc brakes with large 180 mm rotors, a 2x10 Shimano Cues drivetrain with a low 30-tooth inner ring and 39-tooth largest sprocket for steep hills, and Schwalbe tyres with a puncture-protection layer.

The aluminium frame is set up for practical use, with rack and mudguard mounts, cargo mounts on the steel fork, a top-tube bag mount and three bottle mounts. That makes it a sensible base for commuting or weekend touring.

The main weakness is the tyres. They are durable, but they feel sluggish and take the edge off what is otherwise a lively ride. Swapping them for a faster set when they wear out is an easy upgrade. You also need to budget for mudguards and a rack if you plan to ride in Irish or British winters.

Pinnacle is Evans Cycles' own brand, so you buy it from Evans stores or online with in-store set-up. For a first proper commuter bike, it is hard to beat for value.
