Pros

  • Soft and smooth ride
  • Light for the cushioning
  • Secure heel and midfoot
  • Dependable all-rounder

Cons

  • Not very lively or fast
  • Wider fittings not confirmed
  • Pricey

The Clifton is the shoe that made HOKA popular, and the 11th version sticks to the recipe: lots of soft foam, a rocker shape that rolls you forward and a weight that stays reasonable. HOKA lists a 42 mm heel and 34 mm forefoot stack with an 8 mm drop, and a men's weight of 283 g in EU size 44.

The midsole is compression-moulded EVA, an older and firmer-feeling foam than the supercritical blends in some rivals, but it keeps the shoe durable and stable. The engineered mesh upper has a padded heel, a double lace lock and printed overlays for lockdown. Durabrasion rubber covers the heel and forefoot, while the midfoot is left as exposed foam to save weight.

A retailer notes that the last is unchanged from the Clifton 10, with slightly more volume in the forefoot, so fit is familiar to previous owners.

It suits easy runs, walking and long days on your feet. For something bouncier and lighter, look at the Mach 7. For even more cushioning, the Bondi 9 is next.

HOKA Mach 7
Best for faster runs

HOKA Mach 7

Best for: Quick days at a fair price · Mid-range

A light, bouncy trainer that handles tempo runs but is comfortable enough for easy ones.

Each shop shows its own price, currency and delivery terms. Not every shop delivers abroad, and taxes can differ.

Pros

  • Light and bouncy
  • Good price for the quality
  • Three widths
  • No plate to get used to

Cons

  • Less cushioned than the Clifton
  • Low drop may feel odd at first
  • Narrow-ish toe box for some

The Mach is HOKA's fast daily shoe, and the seventh version is a lighter, more energetic option than the Clifton without costing much more. It uses supercritical EVA foam in a 37 mm heel and 32 mm forefoot stack with a 5 mm drop, and a retailer lists the men's weight at 8.3 oz.

There is no plate, so the shoe feels natural rather than stiff, and the rocker geometry helps it roll nicely at tempo pace. The upper is a jacquard mesh with a gusseted tongue to hold your foot, sticky rubber covers the forefoot for grip and tougher Durabrasion rubber protects the heel.

It is also offered in Narrow, Regular and Wide, which helps with varied foot shapes. The 5 mm drop is lower than many rivals, so build up mileage gradually if you are used to more.

For runners who want a single shoe for easy runs, strides and tempo sessions, it is hard to beat at this level. Anyone wanting maximum softness should look at the Clifton 11 or Bondi 9 instead.

HOKA Bondi 9
Best max cushioning

HOKA Bondi 9

Best for: Maximum softness underfoot · Upper mid-range

The plushest HOKA road shoe, with a broad, stable base and lots of width choice.

Compare prices in other countries

Each shop shows its own price, currency and delivery terms. Not every shop delivers abroad, and taxes can differ.

Pros

  • Very soft landing
  • Stable, wide base
  • Wide and X-Wide fits
  • Good for work and walking

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Not for fast running
  • Costly

The Bondi is HOKA's most cushioned road shoe and the one many nurses, teachers and walkers wear all day. Version 9 uses a new supercritical EVA midsole with a 5 mm drop and the deepest cushioning in the HOKA road range. The men's weight is 297 g.

The feel is soft but not wobbly, thanks to a wide platform and a rocker shape that rolls you along. The upper is engineered mesh made with 55% recycled material, and HOKA adds durable rubber only where wear happens to keep weight down.

It is available in Regular, Wide and X-Wide fits, which sets it apart from most max-cushion shoes.

The shoe is heavier and slower than the Mach 7 or Clifton 11, so it suits recovery runs, long walks and runners who value comfort over pace.

If you want your joints looked after on hard pavement, this is the HOKA to try first. If you need something lighter, the Clifton 11 is a more versatile choice.

HOKA Speedgoat 7
Best for trail running

HOKA Speedgoat 7

Best for: Grippy, cushioned trail miles · Upper mid-range

HOKA's cushioned trail favourite with deep lugs and a more lively midsole than the last version.

Compare prices in other countries

Each shop shows its own price, currency and delivery terms. Not every shop delivers abroad, and taxes can differ.

Pros

  • Excellent grip
  • Cushioned for long days
  • Lively for a trail shoe
  • Stable on rough ground

Cons

  • Firm lugs on hard surfaces
  • Not a road shoe
  • Foam and widths not confirmed

The Speedgoat has long been HOKA's go-to trail shoe, and the seventh version aims for a bouncier midsole than its predecessor. A retailer lists HOKA's men's weight at 9.7 oz per shoe, with a 5 mm drop and 5 mm lugs on a Vibram Megagrip outsole, which is a respected compound for wet rock and mud.

HOKA positions it as a cushioned shoe that stays stable on rough ground, without the very tall feel of some max-cushion trail shoes.

On the trail it gives plenty of cushion for long days without feeling tall or unstable. The grip on loose and wet ground should be a highlight, and HOKA says the midsole is livelier, though the lugs can feel firm on tarmac connecting sections.

We could not confirm foam type or width options from the pages we could open, so check HOKA before buying if you need a wide fit. It is a good choice for hill running, fell races and hikes where you want comfort and traction. For road use, the Clifton 11 is a better match.

HOKA Transport 2

HOKA Transport 2

Best for: Walking and everyday wear · Mid-range

A sturdy walking shoe with a bit of HOKA cushioning and grippy Vibram rubber.

Each shop shows its own price, currency and delivery terms. Not every shop delivers abroad, and taxes can differ.

Pros

  • Grippy Vibram outsole
  • Toggle laces are quick
  • Reflective details
  • Water-repellent upper

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Moderate cushioning
  • Stack height not published

The Transport 2 is less a running shoe and more a walking and everyday shoe from HOKA, and it is the most relaxed pick on this page. It uses a sugarcane-based EVA midsole for moderate cushioning, a 5 mm drop and a neutral shape with a mild J-Frame guidance feature and a wide base.

The outsole is Vibram EcoStep Recycle, which gives dependable grip on wet city pavements and light trails. The upper is recycled polyester with a Cordura tongue and reflective details around the shoe, and the finish is water-repellent, although the shoe is not waterproof.

A toggle lace system sits alongside regular laces, so you can slip it on or tighten it properly. HOKA lists the men's weight at 320 g, noticeably more than the road runners above, and does not publish a stack height.

We rely on HOKA's own description here. It is a sensible choice if you mostly walk, commute or travel and want some HOKA softness in a tougher, more casual shoe. If you plan to run, step up to the Clifton 11 or Mach 7.

HOKA Cielo X1 3.0

HOKA's carbon-plated racer with PEBA foam, a rocker shape and a narrow race fit.

Each shop shows its own price, currency and delivery terms. Not every shop delivers abroad, and taxes can differ.

Pros

  • Lightweight and very bouncy
  • Smooth rocker ride
  • Secure race fit
  • Works for 5 km to marathon

Cons

  • Very expensive
  • Narrow midfoot
  • Limited durability for daily use

The Cielo X1 3.0 is HOKA's top road racer, and the third version is lighter and bouncier than the one before. A retailer lists HOKA's figures as a 38 mm heel and 31 mm forefoot stack with a 7 mm drop, and a men's weight near 213 g in US size 10.

The midsole is a dual-layer PEBA foam over a carbon plate, which gives a springy, propulsive ride, and HOKA's rocker geometry keeps turnover smooth when legs tire. The upper is a Leno-weave mesh that holds the foot snugly, with a narrow midfoot that suits a snug race fit.

It is the most expensive shoe on this page, so it is best kept for key sessions and races. We did not find the outsole rubber or width options stated in sources we could open.

It makes sense for experienced runners chasing a personal best. Everyone else is better served by the Mach 7 for speed and the Clifton 11 for daily miles, both of which cost far less.

Buying guide

How much cushioning do you need?

HOKA shoes range from the moderate Transport 2 and Mach 7 to the plush Bondi 9. More foam means a softer ride and usually more weight. Most people are happy with the Clifton 11, which sits comfortably in the middle.

Rocker shape and drop

Many HOKA shoes have a curved sole that helps you roll forward. The drop is often lower than other brands, around 5 mm on the Bondi and Mach. If you are used to higher-drop shoes, build up mileage gradually in the first couple of weeks.

Fit and widths

Widths vary by model. The Bondi 9 comes in Regular, Wide and X-Wide, the Mach 7 in Narrow, Regular and Wide, while the Clifton 11 may only be sold in standard width in some shops. Check before ordering.

Road, trail or walking

The Speedgoat 7 is made for trails with deep lugs and a grippy sole, while the Transport 2 is built for walking and travel. Using road shoes on rough trails wears the outsole and gives less grip.

Spending wisely

A race shoe like the Cielo X1 3.0 is costly and wears out faster. Many runners are better off spending on a good daily trainer and one mid-priced speed shoe.

Frequently asked questions

Is HOKA good for beginners?

Yes. The Clifton 11 is a popular first HOKA because the cushioning is soft and the shape is easy to run in. The Bondi 9 is even softer if you are heavier or prefer maximum comfort.

Do HOKA shoes run big or small?

HOKA does not publish a single sizing rule. If you are between sizes or have wide feet, check whether the model has a Wide option and try the shoes on if you can.

Which HOKA is best for walking?

The Bondi 9 and Clifton 11 are both comfortable for long walks, and the Transport 2 is more casual and rugged with Vibram grip. For all-day standing, many people prefer the Bondi.

Are HOKA shoes good for plantar fasciitis or sore feet?

Soft, rockered shoes can feel more comfortable on tender feet, but this depends on the person. Speak to a clinician or podiatrist about persistent heel pain rather than relying on a shoe alone.

How long do HOKA shoes last?

Most road models last several hundred kilometres depending on your weight and surface. Soft midsoles can feel flat sooner, and racing shoes wear out more quickly than daily trainers.
