Cube Reaction Hybrid Performance 720
Best hardtail

Best for: Long rides and mixed tracks · Mid-range

Our verdict: A big-battery Bosch hardtail for forest roads, gravel and light trails that gives you range and polish at a mid-tier price, though it is heavy.

Full review

The Cube Reaction Hybrid Performance is a practical hardtail for riders who want range before outright trail aggression. The Bosch Performance Line motor delivers up to 75 Nm and is known for being smooth and quiet, and the 720 Wh PowerTube battery is large for a bike at this level. Cube quotes the battery's best-case range at up to 185 km, a figure that assumes ideal conditions, so plan on far less in hilly terrain.

The equipment is sensible rather than exciting. A 12-speed Shimano Deore drivetrain with a 10-51T cassette gives a wide gear spread for climbing, 2.6 in Schwalbe Smart Sam tyres add comfort and grip on gravel and forest tracks, and the SR Suntour coil fork offers 120 mm of travel (100 mm on smaller frames). The aluminium frame has internal cable routing and is ready for mudguards, so the bike works as a trail machine and an everyday ride.

The main downside is weight. Cube lists 26.2 kg for the version we checked, and the big battery is part of that. Brakes are Shimano MT200 hydraulics, perfectly fine for moderate use but not what you would choose for steep descents.

For mixed riding with the odd trail, and for riders who value battery size above suspension, it is a solid mid-priced choice.

Spec check note: We checked the Easy Entry (27.5 in) version on Cube's page. The 185 km figure is Bosch's best-case range for the PowerTube 720 as shown on Cube's page, not a Cube test of this bike. Wheel size, fork travel and weight differ on the other frame versions; Cube's figures apply.
