Sauvage is one of Dior's best-known men's fragrances, and the Eau de Parfum is the version we would buy first. Dior builds it around juicy Calabrian bergamot, patchouli and a vanilla extract from Papua New Guinea, which gives it a softer, rounder finish than the sharper original Eau de Toilette.

The character is bright and peppery at first, easing into a smooth, slightly smoky amber. Dior does not publish wear times, and a concentrated Eau de Parfum like this can get loud quickly, so two or three sprays is plenty, especially in summer.

The main reason to hesitate is popularity. If you want something people will not instantly recognise, look elsewhere. As a safe gift or a single signature scent, though, it is hard to beat, and the 30 ml and 100 ml bottles can be refilled.

For a gift, 30, 60, 100, 200 ml plus refill are the sizes the brand lists, and the same name often covers several versions (Sauvage Eau de Toilette, Parfum and Elixir), so check the label for the exact one before you buy. Try it on skin first if you can, since scent always smells a little different on each person.
