Coco Mademoiselle is one of Chanel's best-known women's fragrances. Chanel describes it as ambery and woody: a bright orange opening, a heart of jasmine and rose, and a sensual base of patchouli and vetiver.

It starts sparkling and citrusy, then settles into a clean, slightly earthy floral that feels polished rather than sweet. Chanel does not publish wear times, but the clean, polished style makes it easy to wear at work with two or three sprays.

The drawbacks are price and style. It is the most expensive fragrance here, and some younger wearers find the patchouli a little serious. If you are buying it as a present, the 35 ml bottle is a good way in. For a warmer, deeper version try the Intense; for something lighter, look at L'Eau Privée.

For a gift, 35, 50, 100, 200 ml are the sizes the brand lists, and the same name often covers several versions (Coco Mademoiselle Intense, L'Eau Privée, Parfum), so check the label for the exact one before you buy.
