Best 85-inch TVs in 2026

Updated · 5 products compared · 19 features compared

85 inches is the size where a TV starts to feel like a home cinema. It fills most of a wall, suits rooms with a viewing distance of three metres or more, and is popular for sport, films and big-screen gaming.

We compared five 85-inch TVs sold in Europe in late 2026. They use Mini LED and QLED technology. OLED TVs are generally sold at 77 and 83 inches rather than 85, so none is included here. We compared brightness, dimming, HDR formats, HDMI ports, gaming features, sound and weight. Prices change often, so check today's price with the buttons.

Pros

  • Four HDMI ports with 4K at 144 Hz
  • VRR, ALLM and FreeSync Premium Pro
  • Mini LED backlight with local dimming
  • Built-in Alexa and wide tuner support

Cons

  • No Dolby Vision listed
  • 30 W speakers are modest for 85 inches
  • Heavy at 32.1 kg without the stand

The QN80H is the most rounded way to buy an 85-inch TV from the group. Samsung lists a Quantum Mini LED backlight with Supreme Mini LED Dimming, a native 100 Hz panel with 144 Hz VRR, and the NQ4 AI Gen2 processor. It is a more modern design than the plain QLED in this group and a clear step up in picture control.

Gaming support is the standout. Samsung lists four HDMI ports with 4K at 144 Hz on each one, along with VRR, ALLM and FreeSync Premium Pro. That leaves room for a console, a PC, a streaming box and a soundbar on the eARC port without swapping cables. HDR support covers NQ HDR+ and HDR10+, but Dolby Vision is not listed, which matters if you stream a lot of Dolby Vision content or use a Dolby Vision-capable Blu-ray player.

Sound is 30 W from a 2.0 speaker system with Dolby Atmos, which is thin for a screen this large, so a soundbar is a worthwhile addition. At 32.1 kg without the stand and 1888.8 mm wide, you will want two people and a strong wall mount with a 600 x 400 mm VESA pattern. For most large living rooms, it is the safe choice.

Pros

  • RGB backlight for colour accuracy
  • Dolby Vision and Google TV
  • Four HDMI 2.1 ports
  • Slim 55 mm body

Cons

  • Highest tier in this group
  • Very heavy at 45.9 kg without the stand
  • Dimming, eARC and gaming features not confirmed

Sony's Bravia 7 II is the premium pick, and it is aimed at film lovers. The retailer listing shows a Mini RGB panel with an RGB LED backlight, a 120 Hz panel, Dolby Vision for HDR and an XR processor. Using separate red, green and blue LEDs in the backlight is designed to improve colour accuracy and purity compared with white LEDs and quantum dots, which should suit film and sports.

The connections include four HDMI 2.1 ports, and Google TV is the smart platform, with Google Assistant and Alexa both supported. The tuner list covers DVB-T and DVB-T2. We could not verify some features that buyers often ask about, including eARC (the listing says ARC), VRR and ALLM, the local dimming zone count and the speaker output, so we have marked these as not stated.

It is also the biggest set here in practical terms. At 45.9 kg without the stand and 1895 mm wide, it needs a strong wall or stand and two people to lift. The 400 x 400 mm VESA pattern is also different from the 600 x 400 mm of the Samsung. It makes sense for people who value film performance and can afford the top tier, but check the full spec with Sony or a retailer first.

Spec check note: Sony's own site blocked our check (access denied), so figures come from a retailer listing. That listing is inconsistent: its headline field says 85 inch but another size field says 65 inch, while the metric diagonal (2150 mm), dimensions and weight match 85 inches, so we used those. It lists 196 W RMS for audio, which looks unusually high, so we show audio as Not stated. Please verify the 85-inch model on Sony's site.

Pros

  • Up to 6,000 nits peak brightness stated by TCL
  • All major HDR formats including Dolby Vision and HDR10+
  • 240 W Bang & Olufsen tuned sound system
  • Four HDMI 2.1 ports with eARC

Cons

  • TCL's smart platform and updates are less proven than rivals
  • Heavy at 34.1 kg without the stand
  • Peak brightness figure is the manufacturer's claim

The C8L is the specification leader of this group on paper. TCL's page lists up to 6,000 nits peak brightness for the 85 and 98-inch sizes, 3,200 Precise Dimming Zones, and a 144 Hz native panel. A retailer listing adds support for Dolby Vision, Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG, so it supports all the main HDR formats, which the Samsung does not.

The gaming list is strong, with four HDMI 2.1 ports, VRR, ALLM and FreeSync Premium Pro, plus a 288 Hz VRR mode when connected to a 288 Hz source. Built-in sound is a big selling point too. The retailer listing gives 240 W RMS with Bang & Olufsen tuning, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, which is far more than the Samsung's 30 W and may mean you can skip a soundbar. eARC is supported.

Google TV with Gemini is the smart platform, and the tuner list covers DVB-C, DVB-S2 and DVB-T2. The practical points to note are the 34.1 kg weight and the 600 x 500 mm VESA pattern. TCL's brand has a shorter record than Samsung or Sony, so update support is worth checking. The brightness figures are manufacturer claims, not measurements. For a bright living room, it offers a lot of screen for the money.

Hisense U7S 85" ULED Mini LED (85U7STUK)

Compare prices in other countries

Each shop shows its own price, currency and delivery terms. Not every shop delivers abroad, and taxes can differ.

Pros

  • Mini LED with 144 Hz panel at a lower tier
  • Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and HLG
  • Four HDMI 2.1 ports
  • Lightest here at 28 kg without the stand

Cons

  • Only 10 W of listed speaker power
  • eARC and ALLM not confirmed
  • Dimming zones not stated

The U7S is the lower-cost way into an 85-inch Mini LED. The retailer listing shows a Direct-LED Mini LED backlight, a 144 Hz native refresh rate, 1,300 cd/m2 brightness and a 5000:1 typical contrast ratio, with Dolby Vision, Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG. That is a very full HDR list for a lower-tier set, and it is wider than the Samsung's.

Four HDMI 2.1 ports are listed, with VRR support under FreeSync Premium Pro, though ALLM is not named in the listing. The weight is 28 kg without the stand, the lowest in this group, which makes it the easiest 85-inch to mount. The VESA pattern is 600 x 400 mm.

The compromises are in sound and details. The speaker output is listed at only 10 W RMS in a 2.1 setup, which is very modest for this screen size, so plan to buy a soundbar. The listing does not state eARC, the number of dimming zones or the model year, and VIDAA has fewer apps than Google TV or Tizen. The tuner list is wide, with DVB-T, T2, S and S2. It is the one to consider when screen size matters more than polish, but check the exact specification with the retailer.

A basic 85-inch QLED for people who want the biggest picture at the lowest tier.

Compare prices in other countries

Each shop shows its own price, currency and delivery terms. Not every shop delivers abroad, and taxes can differ.

Pros

  • 85-inch QLED at the lowest tier here
  • Digital terrestrial and satellite tuner
  • 20 W speakers and Q4 AI processor
  • Same 600 x 400 mm VESA pattern as the QN80H

Cons

  • 50 Hz panel with no gaming features listed
  • No local dimming listed
  • Many specifications not stated

The Q7F is for people who want an 85-inch screen without paying for Mini LED. Retailer listings describe a 4K QLED panel with the Q4 AI processor, Quantum HDR, a 50 Hz refresh rate and three HDMI ports. A QLED panel without a Mini LED backlight offers richer colour than an ordinary LED set, but it cannot match the contrast of the QN80H or the TCL.

The listing gives 20 W RMS stereo sound and a digital tuner for terrestrial and satellite signals. The screen is 1901.2 mm wide without the stand and weighs 32.5 kg, with a 600 x 400 mm VESA pattern, so the mounting needs are the same as for the QN80H.

The data on this model is thin. The retailer page we could read does not list HDR formats, HDMI version, VRR, ALLM, eARC, voice assistants or the smart platform, and Samsung's own UK page was not available to us. The 50 Hz panel and three non-2.1 ports are limiting for a console, so this is a TV for streaming, sport and family viewing. Samsung's range is dated 2025 in retailer listings, so check whether a newer model has replaced it before you buy.

Buying guide

Mini LED, QLED or OLED at 85 inches?

Mini LED backlights use thousands of small LEDs in local dimming zones, which gives better contrast and brightness than a plain QLED. OLED has perfect blacks but is mostly sold at 77 or 83 inches, not 85. A basic QLED like the Samsung Q7F is cheaper but has weaker contrast. In bright rooms, brightness matters more than anything else.

Viewing distance and room size

At 85 inches, you can sit about 2.5 to 3.5 metres from the screen and still see the full benefit of 4K. In a small room it can feel overwhelming. Measure the wall and the doorways before you buy, because these sets are 1.9 metres wide and heavy to carry.

Weight, wall mounts and delivery

The TVs here weigh from 28 kg to 45.9 kg without the stand. Use a mount rated for more than the weight, and match the VESA pattern: 400 x 400 mm for the Sony, 600 x 400 mm for the Samsung and Hisense, and 600 x 500 mm for the TCL. Plan for two people, and check whether the retailer offers installation.

Sound and HDMI ports

Built-in speakers on big TVs are usually weak. The TCL lists 240 W, but the Samsung lists 30 W and the Hisense 10 W, so a soundbar via eARC is a sensible addition. For gaming, check for HDMI 2.1, VRR and ALLM on the port you will use.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best 85-inch TV in 2026?

Of the TVs we compared, the Samsung QN80H gives the best balance of Mini LED dimming, four 144 Hz gaming ports and a mainstream tier. The Sony Bravia 7 II suits film fans with a bigger budget.

Is there an 85-inch OLED TV?

OLED TVs are generally sold at 77 and 83 inches rather than 85, so none is on this page. If you want OLED, look at the 77 and 83-inch sizes.

Is an 85-inch TV too big?

It depends on your room. At a viewing distance of about 3 metres or more it works well. In a small living room, a 65 or 75-inch TV may be more comfortable.

Do I need a soundbar with an 85-inch TV?

Usually yes. Thin TVs have small speakers, and a large screen deserves better sound. The TCL C8L lists a 240 W system, so it may be enough on its own.

Which 85-inch TV is best for gaming?

The Samsung QN80H and TCL C8L both list four HDMI 2.1-class ports with VRR, ALLM and FreeSync Premium Pro, so either suits a PS5, Xbox or PC.
